Since then, family storytime has returned every Tuesday at 4:30pm, and Teen Hangout is also back on Thursdays at 4:30pm. We at the Dorris Van Doren are still trying to provide options for our patrons who may still feel uncomfortable congregating with others in person. </p><p>For June and July, we had a "Stick Together" project which we encouraged all our patrons to participate in! Patrons requested a little sheet of stickers and then placed them on the corresponding grid square. Everyone had fun as the picture revealed itself to be a unicorn!<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiA3bfB3Na6ShhHCD1RSFEi0hW5zGKhcRWQ2NG825KSM1v0V2nVsnVBZGYqyF_y5KdDyDFdv6PTKU86SoI0Nbt_U5p_14-qmu1po6OOgWmk4jVsLmhqM03kOLxLWjv81eeiRu8NVrQsdezS/s2048/IMG_9871.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiA3bfB3Na6ShhHCD1RSFEi0hW5zGKhcRWQ2NG825KSM1v0V2nVsnVBZGYqyF_y5KdDyDFdv6PTKU86SoI0Nbt_U5p_14-qmu1po6OOgWmk4jVsLmhqM03kOLxLWjv81eeiRu8NVrQsdezS/s320/IMG_9871.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We've had storywalks all summer long. Large laminated pages of books were posted on the windows of the library. Patrons can walk from one window to another to read the story. Right now, everyone can come read Flower Garden by Eve Bunting as they stroll around the library.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJnLcvbnU0cSFSIxfwHMnGvCs4558_oaZ2tZCeY9zA4PNw5ACei_yTGtO0fpouNXFOmPWLJgNmiciyNzFrT_JA-cDxRoxLjUa8lHXYfJKs9r3PiFWpV6uBOgVIDMl2jReCQFQR4xGOUOQi/s2048/IMG_9877.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJnLcvbnU0cSFSIxfwHMnGvCs4558_oaZ2tZCeY9zA4PNw5ACei_yTGtO0fpouNXFOmPWLJgNmiciyNzFrT_JA-cDxRoxLjUa8lHXYfJKs9r3PiFWpV6uBOgVIDMl2jReCQFQR4xGOUOQi/s320/IMG_9877.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We've also had a number of take and make crafts available for children and teens throughout the summer. Take and Make crafts for children have included crafts for Father's Day and the Fourth of July. Crafts for teens have included pride friendship bracelets, origami, and now corded coin purses. We also have our virtual volunteers creating puzzles and coloring sheets for all ages!</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWJDTCa22dxqiUskUnvtvzAfi5uUNhceKoE1SvnVDU3i0MRt4JN_A5Ai0EacoZGmrmUWgNJITGHtBtLorwFIKg20BxHI1OsW3qh7_xXfzSgAmymd6HGsIKQ7lnWLsaX2NeVzNG7Kg7D3X-/s2048/IMG_9872.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWJDTCa22dxqiUskUnvtvzAfi5uUNhceKoE1SvnVDU3i0MRt4JN_A5Ai0EacoZGmrmUWgNJITGHtBtLorwFIKg20BxHI1OsW3qh7_xXfzSgAmymd6HGsIKQ7lnWLsaX2NeVzNG7Kg7D3X-/s320/IMG_9872.JPG" width="240" /></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLBUFi8CTZnrfw6G-Q1Jm1Yhw3UG8lpteoVH-nrebNxb-phO7pio6LvI63liu6GmIKZ_5fXi81WNW2zmVXUTZbchvsIp7lxTcIHXg_niQZdUuQjU6BF5qYYq9xxiK_-22_Rh8cMq4lWU0h/s2048/IMG_9878.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLBUFi8CTZnrfw6G-Q1Jm1Yhw3UG8lpteoVH-nrebNxb-phO7pio6LvI63liu6GmIKZ_5fXi81WNW2zmVXUTZbchvsIp7lxTcIHXg_niQZdUuQjU6BF5qYYq9xxiK_-22_Rh8cMq4lWU0h/s320/IMG_9878.JPG" width="320" /></a></div></div><p>Finally, we had a fun matching game for our patrons. We posted photos of staff members and of their pets. Patrons had to guess which pet belonged to who! This was a fun (and hard!) puzzle. Our winner, Joaquin, successfully matched 3 pets with their humans, and won a fun prize package courtesy of the Friends of the Westside Libraries. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht2P1KMuiVZVjweKRRIbgOLm0MWMxcaId2ufk7p03fs4iaSCYzvfcdpmYzcLfFsrM-kb5mJnLxuuh-0zrA0ZYkBqB4IzHg19QWkDHuudxkKhXdzA2Wua0qtpZw0UgmPwFWwCQX_zWEs1mb/s2048/IMG_9879.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht2P1KMuiVZVjweKRRIbgOLm0MWMxcaId2ufk7p03fs4iaSCYzvfcdpmYzcLfFsrM-kb5mJnLxuuh-0zrA0ZYkBqB4IzHg19QWkDHuudxkKhXdzA2Wua0qtpZw0UgmPwFWwCQX_zWEs1mb/s320/IMG_9879.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjFCU2a1RaCx1DQlI3CrpzcqGPlilQXLU7yDRbu7n2bWVSS9nFh7XVjMeMYm7T-2MJx5DLf3p-7dq1yqCIUHAJjVcvzA6_24ihLKgfJxCIIJAzu4XsiKzgEVYLLg7YoelDSbXi6KIzTuO-/s2048/pet+match.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjFCU2a1RaCx1DQlI3CrpzcqGPlilQXLU7yDRbu7n2bWVSS9nFh7XVjMeMYm7T-2MJx5DLf3p-7dq1yqCIUHAJjVcvzA6_24ihLKgfJxCIIJAzu4XsiKzgEVYLLg7YoelDSbXi6KIzTuO-/s320/pet+match.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><p>As the summer winds down, keep an eye out for more opportunities for fun at the library!</p><br /><p></p>Dorris Van Dorenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01444241742700866774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472466186469747317.post-57182500101348006222021-07-26T09:35:00.000-07:002021-07-26T09:35:20.918-07:00Virtual Escape Room<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJLonhfvqyBkBSzZ8MkzirdXzo7qT-xTyNusug-W9PFNjR40Kfi_00lQa-DHTpov7w4O0ZMm1Z7QnPz13kD3dde-tDu5DLSPooOsnhR3Y-SoEGIU6A8B8HI4erkvz8-RwH0dGZ6cv_VeEH/s2000/Virtual+Escape+Room.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2000" data-original-width="1545" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJLonhfvqyBkBSzZ8MkzirdXzo7qT-xTyNusug-W9PFNjR40Kfi_00lQa-DHTpov7w4O0ZMm1Z7QnPz13kD3dde-tDu5DLSPooOsnhR3Y-SoEGIU6A8B8HI4erkvz8-RwH0dGZ6cv_VeEH/w494-h640/Virtual+Escape+Room.png" width="494" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Good luck!</div><br /> <p></p>Dorris Van Dorenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01444241742700866774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472466186469747317.post-14254523944390243892021-07-23T13:51:00.004-07:002021-07-23T14:02:02.239-07:00Teen Hangout Returns!<p>Teen Hangout is back after an extended break due to Covid-19. We're also thinking of our past programs and how much we miss our amazing library guests.<br />
<br />
Today we're looking back to this past January when our Teen Hangout group participated in a button art program. Each of them was given a blank canvas. They painted colorful backgrounds. Then they used tacky glue to stick strategically placed buttons on their canvas to create beautiful artwork!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyAx9m3C3fqE-brFgo8uWHQ5ipF5_iKnW2pall24eMam43CTEnGKBBqlywi46zKTCNwqhTblVdKLv1371G0hM7DcwiFZfHt0FLLdZRxQJT8iEBDTORx_tmZIyHRJOUatsBJRmUiVO8FRUc/s1600/collage+%25282%2529.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="899" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyAx9m3C3fqE-brFgo8uWHQ5ipF5_iKnW2pall24eMam43CTEnGKBBqlywi46zKTCNwqhTblVdKLv1371G0hM7DcwiFZfHt0FLLdZRxQJT8iEBDTORx_tmZIyHRJOUatsBJRmUiVO8FRUc/s400/collage+%25282%2529.png" width="298" /></a></div>
<br />
This is a simple project that can be done at home! How can you replicate this project at home if you don't have all the materials?<br />
<br />
If you don't have a canvas, a piece of cardboard would work as a makeshift canvas (for example, the inside of an empty cereal box). Any type of medium would work to color in your background: paints, marker, color pencils, even crayons! You can use spare buttons you have on hand to glue onto your creation, but this can also be done with other small items such as pebbles, shells, etc. Be creative!<br />
<br />
We can't wait until you're back with us. In the meantime, don't forget to check out our social media accounts for updates! Stay safe, El Paso!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We're celebrating TeenTober all month long at the Dorris Van Doren Library! TeenTober is all about celebrating teens and highlighting the programs and services we provide to them. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All month long, teens between the ages of 12 and 18 have a chance to earn instant win scratchcards. There are a lot of fun prizes to win including a free Whataburgers, stickers, pinback button packs, and pop sockets (courtesy of Whataburger). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In order to get a scratch card, teens have to check out 5 books, write a review of a teen book, and/or attend Teen Hangout on Thursdays. If your ticket doesn't win, no worries! Non-winning tickets are eligible for a second chance drawing. We're giving away a gift basket with a $25 gift card, earbuds, Uno Dare!, pens, and stuff to snack on. The basket was purchased with funds donated by our Friends of the Westside Libraries. </div>

Even though new school year has begun, we're still having fun teen programs going on at the Dorris Van Doren Library all year round!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
To celebrate their first week back in school, our teens joined us for a Wreck This T-Shirt program. Teens are given a blank t-shirt. They can cut it, sew it, draw on it, or paint it. Their t-shirt is theirs to "wreck" however they'd like.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Some of our innovative teens decided to try tie-dying their t-shirts using fabric spray paints. While it didn't work nearly as well as using actual dye, it still had a really nice effect!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Our teens also got a chance to decorate wooden bangle bracelets using acrylic paints. They came up with some beautiful, artistic designs!</div>

<i>Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.</i></div>

<i>Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.</i></div>

<i>Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations―a search for the truth that threatens to consume him....</i></div>

Teens at the Dorris Van Doren Regional Library recently participated in a two-part workshop on making papier-mâché sculptures. The materials used to construct their sculptures were a flour-based glue, old newspapers, balloons, and pipe cleaners. They covered balloons with layers of glue-soaked newspaper to create their structures and then left them to dry. One teen was able to use the materials to construct a whale, using pipe cleaners to create fins.<br />

<i>After the loss of her mother and her own battle with breast cancer, Joanna Teale returns to her graduate research on nesting birds in rural Illinois, determined to prove that her recent hardships have not broken her. She throws herself into her work from dusk to dawn, until her solitary routine is disrupted by the appearance of a mysterious child who shows up at her cabin barefoot and covered in bruises.</i></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 14px; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px;">
<i>The girl calls herself Ursa, and she claims to have been sent from the stars to witness five miracles. With concerns about the child’s home situation, Jo reluctantly agrees to let her stay—just until she learns more about Ursa’s past.</i></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 14px; margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px;">
<i>Jo enlists the help of her reclusive neighbor, Gabriel Nash, to solve the mystery of the charming child. But the more time they spend together, the more questions they have. How does a young girl not only read but understand Shakespeare? Why do good things keep happening in her presence? And why aren’t Jo and Gabe checking the missing children’s website anymore?</i></div>
<div style="margin-top: -4px; padding: 0px;">
<i>Though the three have formed an incredible bond, they know difficult choices must be made. As the summer nears an end and Ursa gets closer to her fifth miracle, her dangerous past closes in. When it finally catches up to them, all of their painful secrets will be forced into the open, and their fates will be left to the stars.</i></div>
